THIS PART WAS SO GOOD BUT IT WAS WAAAY TOO SHORT FOR HOW MUCH WAS GOING ON IN THE SCENE.
DEAN WAS BASICALLY LIKE: WOW OKAY LOCKING YOURSELF IN HEAVEN WITH DUDES WHO HAVE IT OUT FOR YOU… THAT BALLSY CAS. I HOPE YOU GUYS WORK IT OUT THOUGH. FLY HOME LITTLE BIRD AND BE FREE. I AM SAD, BUT HEAVEN IS WHERE YOU BELONG SO IM BEING SUPPORTIVE HAPPY FOR YOU. AND ANYWAY I HAVE BEEN PREPARING MYSELF FOR THIS DAY SINCE THAT DAY IN THE PARK WHEN WE SAT ON THE BENCH AND I DARED TO THINK OF YOU AS A FRIEND. I ALWAYS KNEW YOU DIDNT BELONG WITH US HERE ON EARTH AND THAT YOU WOULD LEAVE. BECAUSE ONE WAY OR ANOTHER EVERYONE DOES.
AND CAS IS JUST LIKE: YEAH, ITS SAD BECAUSE I HAVE TO CLOSE HEAVEN AND THERES NO WAY I COULD STAY UP THERE SINCE THEY WANT ME DEAD, BUT I LIKE EARTH I GUESS… I MEAN IT HAS YOU AND ALL, BUT ITS STILL SAD TO SEE THE DOOR TO MY HOME CLOSE- WAITAMINUTE… I THINK MAYBE THERE IS SOMETHING MORE IN OUR COMMUNICATION THAT WE’RE NOT UNDERSTANDING THEN JUST THE REFERENCE….?
AND MEANWHILE, THE BARTENDER WAVES AT CAS AND DEAN, ACKNOWLEDGING THEM AND PROBABLY ASSUMING THAT CAS HAS FOUND HIS ‘PARTNER IN CRIME WHO LIKES ROLE PLAY AND LIGHT DOMINATION’ THAT HE WAS LOOKING FOR IN THE PERSONAL ADS EARLIER.
ADD TO THAT- THE CUPID FINALLY SHOWS UP AND THE TWO NON STEREOTYPICAL “MANLY” GUYS ARE FATED TO BE TOGETHER… WOW PARALLEL COUPLES AND FORESHADOWING MUCH????!!
WAIT OMG LMAO
CAS WAVES TO THE BARTENDER WHILE SITTING WITH DEAN
THE BARTENDER THOUGHT CAS WAS TRYING TO PICK HIM UP EARLIER
THE BARTENDER WAVES BACK AND SMILES
BECAUSE HE THINKS CAS FOUND A GUY WHO LIKES NURSE ROLEPLAY AND LIGHT DOMINATION
AND WELL
HE’S NOT EXACTLY WRONG, IS HE?
Okay, but can we talk about how Dean’s hand would have absolutely no effect on holding Cas back? Cas is an angel, and Dean’s hand is barely holding on to his arm. He could easily pull away and rush forward to kill Naomi, but he doesn’t. Even though he’s furious and desperate and guilty, enough to shake off Dean’s hand angrily, enough to blindly trust Metatron even given evidence that he isn’t working in Heaven’s best interest, even with all that, Cas still responds to Dean’s hand on his arm. He doesn’t break free to kill Naomi, because Dean asked him not to.
Also, the fact that it was Dean asking Cas to behave prudently speaks volumes toward his maturing as a character. He’s acting as Cas’ conscience in many ways that I find intriguing. This is not the Dean that rushes into a lethal situation without regards to whether it’s the right thing, just because a supernatural being is involved, anymore. This is a kinder, gentler Dean who gets that Cas is at a breaking point and wants to not only protect the cupid, but also Cas who may just be too used to killing (and it’s tearing him apart). And, this is not a Dean that gives Cas an ultimatum; do this or else. This is a Dean who is treating Cas like a, dare I say it, true partner in crime.

Let’s all talk about the fact that Cas is EATING the popcorn.
Cas has only eaten once up to this point, and that was only because his vessel was affected by Famine, which was beyond his control. He does not need to eat and does not think to eat. And yet, in this scene the popcorn is sitting closest to him, the only person in the room who does not eat.
It’s unlikely that he made the popcorn because, let’s face it, he’d probably set something on fire doing it. So he probably didn’t make it and carry it to the table and happen to set it down there, which means Sam or Dean did. Given that Sam is messing with the projector, we can reason that Dean most likely made the popcorn and brought it to the table. And yet, instead of putting it close to himself, or in the center where they can all reach, or between himself and Sam (you know, the people who EAT), he put it in front of Cas.
And Cas ate it.
Let’s also think about the fact that in the same episode, Dean was attempting to feed Sam because he was injured. Cas is also injured, and Dean, despite what he says, still wants Cas to “get better”.
His instinct, whether he’s aware of it or not, is to take care of Cas because he cares. And Cas accepted this gesture even though he does not need it, because it is from Dean. Without words, they give and take, and in that act shows their profound bond is still there, and still strong.
Thank you for this. I seriously love hearing peoples’ takes on certain scenes and I love your theory on this one
#THE WORST THING DEAN COULD HAVE SAID TO CAS #BECAUSE HE’S TAKING IT BACK #DEAN GAVE THAT TO CAS IN PURGATORY #AND AGAIN IN THE CRYPT SCENE#BECAUSE HE MEANT IT #THEY NEEDED CAS #DEAN NEEDED CAS #AND CAS JUST RAN #BOTH TIMES HE LEFT DEAN ALONE #FOOL ME ONCE SHAME ON YOU #FOOL ME TWICE SHAME ON ME #DEAN ISN’T GOING TO GIVE CAS A THIRD CHANCE RIGHT NOW #BECAUSE HE’S BEEN BURNED #AND HE’S FRUSTRATED AND HURT #CAS DIDN’T TRUST HIM ENOUGH #SO DEAN TOOK A STEP BACK #8X22 #UGH
I agree and disagree.
I think the important thing to note is that he says, “We don’t need your help,” so I don’t see this as an inversion of the previous “I need you”s. The other two times were Dean saying he needs Cas, not whatever help Cas can provide. In Dean’s mind, these are very distinctly different things; he made the mistake of treating Cas like he was only good inasmuch as he was useful in the past, and after all the terrible shit that went down Dean makes sure (in his terribly poorly communicated way) not to suggest such a thing again. Because it’s not true anymore — they really don’t need Cas’s help. If they keep Cas around, it’s because he’s family, period. Dean just needs the stupid angel to be there, and he’s tried so hard this season to make Cas understand that.
But does Cas understand it? Well, clearly not. Dean may not intend for “We don’t need your help” to be the opposite of “I need you,” but Cas still interprets it that way. And that’s the real tragedy here. Dean’s thinking, “I’ve made this clear multiple times, and every time you just leave.” He feels betrayed because he’s bared his soul for Cas and gotten nothing in return; he thinks, for once, that he’s made his point clear. But Cas, for his part, hasn’t gotten the message. Perhaps on some level he understands what Dean has been getting at, but he certainly hasn’t accepted it. He still thinks he has to do things to earn his place in the Winchesters’ lives — that, oh, but if I can just do this good thing for Dean, everything will be okay again. Hence the comically/tragically desperate shopping incident.
Basically, if this scene doesn’t sum up Dean and Cas’s problems this season, nothing does. Dean thinks he’s being clear; he’s telling Cas the other half of what he’s been saying all season: “We don’t need your help, but I need you.” And Cas, bless him, still thinks that he can make things better by being useful, by going out and doing good things until Dean forgives him. The irony is that it’s quite literally the opposite; if he’d just stay for once and stop trying to take action to get back into Dean’s good graces, he would be back in Dean’s good graces. Goddammit.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go cry and punch a wall because these two are such oblivious morons.
THIS:
“And Cas, bless him, still thinks that he can make things better by being useful, by going out and doing good things until Dean forgives him. The irony is that it’s quite literally the opposite; if he’d just stay for once and stop trying to take action to get back into Dean’s good graces, he would be back in Dean’s good graces.”
Because a part of Cas still equates “I need you” with “You’re useful to me”. And he just doesn’t understand, not on any *reasonable* level, that he is something *more* to Dean than a nifty swiss army knife. He tells Dean, “Let me go with you (because I can be useful)” and Dean tries to tell him “Stay and get better” but all Castiel hears is (so you can heal and be useful later). He doesn’t hear the “stay” part at all.
And it just makes me what to rip my hair out.
No, look guys. Dean is begging to understand himself here. Begging. ”Dude, if anybody else, I mean anybody, pulled that kinda crap I would stab them in their neck. Why should I give him a pass?”
And all Sam can tell him is “Because it’s Cas.”, hoping Dean can understand the reason himself. Hoping he’ll finally realize…
Sam’s had enough, he’s just DONE.
This.
We’re right back to the same language Dean was using throughout the post-Purgatory episodes. He’s saying exactly what he’s thinking, but couching it in anger, twisting it around into contradictions because he’s both still processing and also completely unable to process it. Same way he snaps at Cas they don’t need him, and he should stay in the bunker and heal up. Dean’s clinging to defense mechanisms because that’s all he’s got. He can’t deal with the question and he can’t deal with his pain.
(Not to say that this is the most mature response, but baby steps. It’s the first time in a while he’s done this, and the fact that Sam calls him on it suggests it will probably be resolved next episode.)
My favorite thing about Sam’s response is that “because it’s Cas” will never in a million years equate to because he’s our most trustworthy ally or he’s our friend we’ve never had problems with in the past. He’s trying to get Dean to place it internally that Cas get passes for a reason, the reasons Dean has been pining for him all season. Yes, good.
I think this is also a parallel to his question to Cas, “What broke it?” and the entire audience was screaming at their screens, “IT WAS YOU, YOU IDIOT!”
Because I was certainly screaming at Sam to say, “Because you love him, dumbass!”
This guy will always remember that one shift where this crazy guy showed up, cracked open an egg, grabbed him by the shirt and demanded pie
This will forever be the most ridiculous destiel scene of S8. Not the hug. Not 8x08. This. Because Cas is like FUCK i can fix this i can fix this okay he likes jerky and this specific kind of porn and he uses the bathroom right? and okay i’ve seen him drink this beer now i need pie where’s the pie *grabs cashier* YOU DONT UNDERSTAND I NEED PIE I CAN FIX ALL OF THIS AND DEAN WILL LOVE ME AND NOT BE MAD AT ME IF I CAN JUST DO THIS RIGHT AND HE’LL COME HOME AND I’LL BE THERE WITH BEER AND PIE AND WE’LL TALK AND I’LL EXPLAIN THAT I DID IT TO PROTECT HIM BECAUSE I DO EVERYTHING TO PROTECT HIM AND-
i’m hyperventilating rn. i’ll see myself out.
It’s sad that Cas was desperately trying to figure out what to buy to get Dean to forgive him and instead has ended up being talked into yet another plan that, among other things, has made Dean feel like Cas abandoned him yet again.
Yes and this is exactly what makes me so angry. I think Cas has learned that lesson by now— or at least is very close to understanding it— so why did the writers make him repeat the same mistake again? URGH
I’m hoping it will turn out to be a reversal of the themes of seasons 6 & 7, like some of this season has been. Cas better say “Fuck this shit Marve I’m out” or I’m going to keep on being pissed. If they do reverse it all and have Cas make the right choice then I will actually be glad this mirco-regression happened, just because it will highlight this turning point in his character development.
And there better be another “I’d rather have you” speech in the finale, except this time coming from Cas to Dean.
Oh, I definitely think that’s exactly the point. Because they never got to deal with the fundamental issues behind why things went so terribly wrong in S6. Dean trying so hard to keep Cas up on that angelic pedestal all the way up until Cas fell off with a thud and cracked into pieces; Cas trying so hard to protect Dean that he ended up betraying him. Their stubbornness and their pride. Each trying, in their own way, to be ‘the man’ and failing because it meant that they didn’t give themselves any room to be people.
I think that’s exactly the point of all of this.

everyone says this to me and i always have the same response; i really don’t believe season six will happen again!!!
first of all i trust carver to know that repeating that is, frankly, boring; second of all this season they’ve been closer than ever and Dean’s care for him as a person has never been more explicit ♥ and third, i am hoping that the events of this episode were more of a push to make cas break the cycle and stop doing things he doesn’t really want to do.
The emphasis on Dean and Cas fighting was so emphasised in this episode that they can’t not reconcile; their relationship has been so fraught this season but underlying it has always been this thread of love (i need you, i need you, cas breaking naomi’s hold on him, and so on) - Dean’s pissed, sure, but it’s not because he hates cas or anything (god forbid!) it’s because he loves him. Remember how he was with Sam, in season four? Dean loves people so much i think sometimes it’s a little difficult for him to cope with in any other way than getting angry. It’s a defense mechanism; and you guys know i love that little angel socks to the ends of the earth, but it’s fact that Cas has hurt him (however good his intentions) more than once.
If they don’t reconcile this season (which i think they will!!) then they will next season; and early on, too. All this trouble between them can’t build to nothing; i think, like a lot of things this season, the trouble is helping them grow. They need to, in order to function as friends; just like Sam needs to be ‘purified’ before he can truly start building himself a life.
It’s all procedural, it’s all going to work out. Personally I’m not worried about Dean and Cas at all; they’re the Ship That Could, there’s not much you can do to separate them. Even death couldn’t do a firm enough job (and god knows, it tried!). ♥
